Melissa Caplan- Artist

The parameters of beauty and ugliness are in the eyes of the beholder.
The line that separates them, either way, is the place that I explore with my work.
Through the use of photography, light, glass, hand-made paper and the process of printing, layering I produce collages.
Through use of re-cycling / up-cycleing I also produce works of 3D, I build genetically modified objects of beauty.
A Frankenstein, that posses as many question as it answers.
My intentions are to build works that translate my personal notions and queries, into a difference acceptance of beauty.
To this end, my bible is “Geek Love” by Katherine Dunn. In the world of the protagonist, of this book. They and the fact that they are “freaks” makes them, the beautiful and the normal ones.
The vision of artist such as Yayoi Kasuma and Cindy Sherman continue to festinate and influence me.
I feel I should express not only my version of the feminine but also those of conceived misfits and the unconventional, and give them value.
